American Kidney Fund Activates Disaster Relief Program for Kidney Patients Affected by Louisiana and Mississippi Floods

ROCKVILLE, MD, UNITED STATES, August 17, 2016 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The American Kidney Fund (AKF), the nation’s leading provider of charitable assistance to people with kidney failure, has activated its Disaster Relief Program to help dialysis patients affected by the devastating flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi.

AKF’s Disaster Relief Program is a rapid-response system that provides emergency assistance in the form of block grants to patients receiving dialysis treatments when disaster strikes a community. The funds may be used to help patients replace medications, food and household items, and pay for essentials such as the cost of fuel or transportation to dialysis if they have been temporarily evacuated.

“Louisiana’s governor has called this an ‘unprecedented and historic flooding event.’ For patients who depend on regular dialysis for survival, the extreme flooding threatens their ability to get the treatment they need to stay alive,” said LaVarne A. Burton, president and chief executive officer of the American Kidney Fund. “Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are ready to provide emergency assistance to any qualified Louisiana and Mississippi dialysis patients who have been affected.”

AKF’s largest disaster relief effort occurred after Hurricane Katrina, when more than 5,100 Gulf Coast dialysis patients in 12 states received emergency assistance totaling over $260,000 from AKF, thanks to generous donations from individuals and corporations. Earlier this year, AKF provided disaster relief support for flood-affected patients in West Virginia and the Gulf States.
