Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a bold move to ensure Sierra Leone’s strong presence at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the National Olympic Committee/Commonwealth Games Association (NOC/CGA-SLE), the National Sports Authority (NSA), and the Ministry of Sports (MoS) have joined forces to form a high-powered Tripartite Committee.
The committee was officially launched during a strategic meeting with various sports associations on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s conference hall in Freetown. The gathering not only focused on preparations for the Glasgow Games but also highlighted the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, aligning sports with environmental sustainability.
Chaired by Steven Kelfala, Director of Participation and Sustainable Sports at the NSA, the meeting emphasized the need for collaboration, discipline, and strategic planning ahead of the 2026 Games.
“This is not just about participation—it’s about changing the narrative for Sierra Leonean sports,” declared Prince Sualley, President of NOC/CGA-SLE. “We must work as a unit, vet our athletes thoroughly, and use upcoming competitions like the Islamic Solidarity Games (November 2025) and the African Beach Games as stepping stones to Glasgow.”
Sualley also revealed that Sierra Leone has received its official invitation to the Islamic Solidarity Games, which will soon be presented to President Bio, through the Ministry of Sports and the NSA.
Abdul Rahman Swarray, Deputy Executive Director of the NSA, hailed the committee’s formation, calling it a game-changer for Sierra Leone’s sports development. “This collaboration will streamline our efforts and ensure we send our best athletes to Glasgow,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Haroun Mustapha Korjie, Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports, reaffirmed the government’s full support for the initiative.
Representatives from key sports federations—including basketball, boxing, weightlifting, athletics, gymnastics, judo, and swimming—provided updates on their athletes’ progress, showcasing the nation’s growing talent pool.
