US tariff measures on Europe: Trump dashes Hungary’s hopes for a special deal

Hungary’s hopes for a special trade deal with the United States have been dashed after Donald Trump confirmed that his administration will only negotiate with the European Union as a single bloc, dealing a setback to Prime Minister Orbán’s diplomatic strategy.

Trump sees the EU as one bloc

As Blikk reports, the Hungarian government’s ambitions to secure a unique trade agreement with the United States have been dealt a significant blow following Donald Trump’s declaration that the US will only engage in trade negotiations with the European Union as a single bloc. The US president made his stance clear during a cabinet meeting, underlining that while each EU member state has its own character, Washington views the bloc as one entity for negotiation purposes.

Hungary hoped for a special deal

For months, Hungarian officials had floated the idea that their country could leverage the close Orbán-Trump connection to achieve a special arrangement with the US. Orbán’s early endorsement of Trump and their meetings before the US election had fuelled expectations in Budapest. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó even falsely claimed that the EU had failed to engage the US in trade talks. However, evidence suggests the European Commission had already offered to eliminate tariffs, an offer that the Trump administration rejected as insufficient.

China faces harsher measures

Meanwhile, Trump’s broader trade agenda has seen a tough stance on China. The president recently announced a 90-day tariff freeze for non-retaliatory countries, applying a 10 percent tariff during this period to allow room for new talks. However, China faces even harsher measures, with tariffs now soaring to 145 percent, including a sharp increase on the opioid fentanyl. In his social media message, Trump justified the move by accusing China of disrespecting global market rules, further cementing his administration’s protectionist approach.

  1. The EU is already in a tizzy to the point of declarng war on the US. There is plenty of time to work with hungary to bring peace and stop the killing in the Ukraine. The EU wants to put boots on the ground to keep it going- first kicking Hungary out the EU must be done.

  2. Orban’s lips are cramped from all the ass-kissing that got him nothing. The 2025 “Golden Age” of Hungary is going to be a nightmare. Imagine if Kamela Harris was president instead. Hungary would not be going through the extreme pain it is now going to have to endure. Well what did Orban’s constant endorsement of Trump bring to Hungarians? It brought failure .
