Two young soccer fans were killed in Santiago, Chile, when chaos erupted before a soccer match at Monumental Stadium on Thursday, April 10. This footage filmed by Giovanni Eduardo Vigorena Santander shows mayhem on the pitch as fans forced their way through an acrylic barrier onto the field to protest the deaths earlier in the day, according to a local report. The victims, aged 13 and 18, were killed by fallen barriers during chaotic clashes between fans and police outside the stadium, local news reported, as fans of Chile’s Colo Colo club attempted to force entry into the venue before the start of the Copa Libertadores match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza of Brazil. Chile’s Minister of Security, Luis Cordero, announced that a police officer was suspended following the incident. Cordero also announced the resignation of Pamela Venegas, head of Estadio Seguro, a government program responsible for stadium safety and event coordination. Chile’s National Professional Football Association (ANFP) called for the implementation of a National Fan Registry, a system that would track and manage fans attending matches.
