NEW DELHI: Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to strengthen over the next 36 hours and move towards the north-northwest during the next two days, said  the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday.

At 11:30 p.m. on June 8, the IMD reported that the extremely dangerous cyclonic storm was over the east-central Arabian Sea, 840 km west-southwest of Goa and 870 km west-southwest of Mumbai.

"On June 8, 2023, around 23:30 IST, a very severe cyclonic storm named Biparjoy was over the east-central Arabian Sea, about 840 km west-southwest of Goa and 870 km west-southwest of Mumbai. To gradually intensify over the following 36 hours and proceed approximately north-northwestward during the following two days," it tweeted.

The weather service had previously issued a statement stating that "VSCS BIPARJOY over east-central Arabian Sea, lay centred at 0530hrs IST of 08th June, near lat 13.9N & long 66.0E, about 860km west-southwest of Goa, 910km southwest of Mumbai, would intensify further & move north-northwestwards."

The IMD has also warned fishermen in the Arabian Sea not to travel to such cyclone-affected areas. It had earlier stated that those who were at sea should head back to land.
