LOGAN – The 2022 football season for Region 11 saw its fair share of ups and downs with player injuries, new coaches, young players stepping into expanded roles and multiple teams making it to the 4A semifinal playoff games in Cedar City. The season was full of close contests and exciting plays and the voting members* of the Cache Valley Media Group who regularly follow high school football have voted on and selected the All Region 11 1st and 2nd teams, along with an MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Running back Brevin Egbert from Sky View was recognized as the MVP; wide receiver Andrew Thornley from Logan was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Year; linebacker Carson Olsen from Mountain Crest was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year; and, first-year Mountain Crest head coach Ryan Visser was selected as the Coach of the Year.

“For me, running back is where Region 11 really shined this year,” says Rex Davis, color analyst for the Sky View Bobcats on 106.9 The FAN. “Between Egbert, Will Rippstein (from Ridgeline), Tytan Mason (from Logan), Gavin Christiansen (from Green Canyon), Ethan Bracken (from Logan), Tydon Jones (from Bear River) and Dontay Mcmurtrey and Carson Olsen combined at Mountain Crest, I think all of these good backs are what made the region more even and competitive this year.

“But the back that stood out to me was Brevin Egbert.”

Egbert rushed for over 900 yards and 8 touchdowns while also tallying nearly 200 yards receiving.

“Brevin Egbert is a combination of both speed and power,” Davis added. “Being a former offensive lineman he doesn’t shy away from contact. He can run the ball between the tackles or beat a defender to the sideline. Brevin was the Cache Valley Media Group’s player of the week after the game against MC where he ran for 211 yards and 4 rushing TD’s.”

Region 11 Offensive Player of the Year: Andrew Thornley from Logan

“Despite Logan being a run-heavy offense, Andrew Thornley was a highly productive receiver and consistent presence on the field,” said Jason Walker, play-by-play voice of the Logan High Grizzlies on 102.1 FM / 610 AM KVNU. “He was a walking 70-yard touchdown reception, always a threat to catch a deep pass or take a short pass the distance.”

Thornley was the second leading receiver in all of 4A with 883 yards and 6 touchdowns.

“Whenever Logan needed a big play,” Walker added, “it was nearly always Thornley who was targeted and his big plays were featured in many of the Grizzlies’ wins this season.”

Region 11 Defensive Player of the Year: Carson Olsen from Mountain Crest

“Carson Olsen was the rock of the defense for Mountain Crest,” said John Olsen, color analyst for the Mustangs on 107.7 KLZX. “His abilities to read the field were amazing. In the base 4-2-5 he had to read quickly.”

Olsen was one of the leading tacklers in all of 4A and anchored a stingy Mountain Crest defense that gave up two touchdowns or less seven times this season.

“He was great at run stop and was able to drop to cover flawlessly,” Olsen added. “He played both sides of the ball and never tired!”

Region 11 Coach of the Year: Ryan Visser from Mountain Crest

“Coach Visser has turned the MC program around,” added Olsen. “His ability to build a culture of brotherhood was amazing. He loves the boys and the team.”

Visser’s Mustangs finished 3rd in Region 11 with an overall record of 8-5 (a vast difference compared to the two previous seasons when the Mustangs finished 2-9 both years). Additionally, under Visser’s leadership the Mustangs made it to the 4A semifinals in his first year after defeating #3 Dixie 28-21 on the road.

“After having to start over with three coaches in three years, he got the team to believe in themselves,” Olsen added. “And in a short offseason, he brought in an entire new staff and got coaches, parents and players to come together!”
