Extremely Dangerous Category 4 Hurricane Ida Makes Landfall Near Port Fourchon, Louisiana

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Powerful Hurricane Ida made its first landfall near Port Fourchon Louisiana as a strong Category 4 storm with wind speeds of 150 mph.

At 3 p.m., it made a second landfall just southwest of Galliano Louisiana still a category 4 with wind speeds of 145 mph.

As it continues to move north and eventually northeast, it will move the heavy rain and flooding threat up the Mississippi River, then east through Kentucky before going over the Mid-Atlantic States from Washington, DC to New York City.

The heavy rain threat will follow Ida as it transitions to a tropical storm and eventually a post-tropical area of low-pressure Wednesday and Thursday.

While rainfall amounts will not be as high as what Louisiana and Mississippi will get, a large area of 4 to 6 inches of rain is expected to move along with the storm and then off the East Coast later this week.

While the storm was making landfall Sunday along the Gulf Coast inland states like Tennessee and Kentucky were in the process of issuing flash flood watches or flooding outlooks with the threat of heavy rain from Ida under 48 hours away. Areas in Ida's path have seen a surplus of rain over the last 2 weeks.

It was just a week ago that Middle Tennessee received 9 to 17 inches of rain leading to the deadly flooding in Waverly.

Closer to the coast the areas impacted by Tropical Storm Henri may also have to contend with more heavy rain over the next few days.

As the storm transitions to a post-tropical low-pressure system off the Atlantic coast, it will turn our breeze to the south and eventually the southwest.

This can increase the showers and storms over the east coast metro areas especially in the afternoons. Look for stronger storms to develop and remain over the east coast later this week as opposed to pushing inland.
