Manila: Four people have died in floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Quiel (Nakri) in the northern Philippines, the national disaster relief agency said Saturday.

More than 21,000 people were displaced by the storm which maintained its strength as it blew out of the Philippines.

The most affected was the northern province of Cagayan, where most of the victims came from, the national disaster relief agency said.

Twenty-six roads and five bridges in the affected areas were closed to traffic due to the floods or landslides, it added.

Nakri was packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 150 kph as it moved out of the Philippines Saturday, the weather bureau said.

It brought heavy rains to the northern Philippines starting on Tuesday, and was almost stationary for a day before it started to move away very slowly, the bureau added.

Each year the Philippines is hit by an average of 20 cyclones, causing floods, landslides and other accidents, dpa reported.

One of the strongest in recent memory, Typhoon Haiyan, hit the country in November 2013, killing more than 6,300 people and displacing more than 4 million. (QNA)
