Nassau, September 5 (RHC)-- A delegation from CARICOM arrived in the Bahamas on Thursday to become more aware of the situation following Hurricane Dorian, which left at least 20 people dead and extensive material damage.

The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community, Irwin LaRocque, and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottle, lead the mission that is meeting with the Bahamian authorities and people.

CARICOM expressed its solidarity with the Bahamian people and government since the powerful meteorological phenomenon began to whip the archipelago with winds of more than 250 kilometers per hour and torrential rains.

For its part, the Government of Guyana through the Civil Defense Commission activated its response mechanism to facilitate assistance and support to the Bahamas, which has suffered

According to reports, the devastation is unprecedented and extensive, with many houses, businesses and other buildings totally or partially destroyed.

At this time, water pumps, reverse osmosis plants, bladder tanks, generators and hygiene kits are the immediate needs identified by the country, although financial support is urgently needed.

Faced with the critical outlook of the nation, the Government of Bahamas has  set up accounts to receive monetary donations from the public by bank transfer.
